Quick Answer

Marseille is a major Mediterranean cruise port in the south of France. Large ships usually use the Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal area at the northern end of the port, which is not the same as the pretty old harbour you see in postcards.

Where It Is

The main cruise terminal is north of central Marseille, while the Vieux-Port is the historic heart of the city. Smaller ships may dock closer in, but large mainstream ships normally use the larger terminal area.

Getting There

From Marseille Provence Airport, taxi, transfer or train-and-taxi combinations are common. With cruise luggage, a direct transfer is easiest. From Marseille Saint-Charles station, taxi or cruise shuttle is usually the most practical way to reach the terminal.

Cruise lines may provide shuttle buses into the city on port-call days, but do not rely on that for embarkation logistics without checking your documents.

Where To Stay

Good pre-cruise areas include the Vieux-Port, La Joliette, Euromed and central Marseille near Saint-Charles if you are arriving by train. The Vieux-Port gives the best city feel, while La Joliette can be more practical for the cruise side of town.

What To Do Before Sailing

Top Marseille sights include the Vieux-Port, Notre-Dame de la Garde, Le Panier, MuCEM, Fort Saint-Jean, food markets, boat trips and coastal views. With more time, Aix-en-Provence, Cassis or the Calanques can be excellent, but they need sensible planning.

Embarkation Tips

  • Confirm whether your ship uses the main cruise terminal or a closer berth.
  • Leave extra time for city and port traffic.
  • Do not plan a tight independent trip to Provence on embarkation day.
  • Keep water and sun protection handy in summer.
  • Use a proper transfer if travelling with large luggage.

Best For

Marseille is best for Western Mediterranean cruises, Provence add-ons, France and Italy routes, and travellers who want a grittier, more interesting city than the polished resort version of the Med.

Final Advice

Marseille rewards curiosity, but on cruise day keep the logistics boring. Boring logistics are underrated. They get you onboard.
