Quick Answer

Port Canaveral is the main cruise port for Orlando-area holidays. It is on Florida's Space Coast, around 45 minutes to an hour from Orlando International Airport in normal conditions. It is brilliant for Disney, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and family Caribbean cruises.

Where It Is

Port Canaveral is near Cocoa Beach and the Kennedy Space Center, east of Orlando. It is not in Orlando, so do not book an airport hotel expecting to stroll to the ship.

Getting There

From Orlando International Airport, cruise-line transfers, private shuttles, rental cars and taxis are common options. Many families combine a cruise with theme parks, so transfers between Disney/Universal hotels and the port are also common.

If driving, check your cruise terminal because Port Canaveral has terminals on different sides of the port.

Where To Stay

Stay near Orlando airport for late arrivals, Cocoa Beach for a relaxed pre-cruise beach night, or Orlando theme-park areas if adding Disney or Universal. For easiest embarkation morning, Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral hotels are handy.

What To Do Before Sailing

Kennedy Space Center is the standout pre-cruise attraction. Cocoa Beach, the pier, waterfront restaurants and Orlando theme parks are also popular depending on how much time you have.

Embarkation Tips

  • Price transfers before choosing flights.
  • Add a night if flying from the UK.
  • Check whether a rental car drop-off shuttle serves your terminal.
  • Do not underestimate Orlando traffic.
  • Leave space in luggage if adding theme parks first.

Best For

Port Canaveral is best for family cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean mega-ships, Carnival fun ships and Bahamas/Caribbean routes.

Final Advice

Port Canaveral is easy when planned properly. The only mistake is pretending Orlando airport and the ship are next door. They are not. Florida is large and enthusiastic.
