Carnival Is Moving Two Ships Out of Australia in 2028

Two ships are heading out of Carnival’s Australian line-up, and this is worth knowing if an Australian cruise is sitting on your holiday wish list.

Carnival has confirmed that Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Adventure will leave Australia in March 2028. That gives anyone planning a bigger trip something concrete to check before getting attached to a particular ship.

According to Carnival’s announcement on 15 October, Luminosa’s final voyage from Sydney will depart on 15 March 2028. Adventure will depart Sydney on 20 March and will no longer return to Australia as previously planned.

Carnival will still sail from Australia

Carnival Splendor will continue sailing year-round from Sydney, while Carnival Encounter will continue year-round from Brisbane.

Carnival also says its 2028–29 programme for those ships will be released in the coming weeks.

For me, that makes the sensible next step fairly simple: compare the actual itineraries when they appear, rather than assuming the remaining ships will offer exactly the holiday you had in mind.

If you’re still deciding what sort of trip would suit you, our Australia and South Pacific cruise guide can help frame the options.

Why are the ships moving?

Carnival points to long-term fleet planning, operating conditions and the need for greater certainty when deciding where to deploy its ships.

That is the company’s explanation. I’d be cautious about turning it into a claim that one policy alone caused the decision.

I can understand why a cruise line wants confidence before committing ships years ahead. Equally, I think passengers deserve clear information when plans change, particularly when a cruise forms part of a much bigger holiday.

What I’d check before booking

For a UK traveller, I’d start with the ship, departure date and exact route, then build the rest of the trip around confirmed arrangements.

I wouldn’t rush into booking purely because a ship is leaving. A farewell sailing only makes sense if the dates, itinerary and total cost work for you.

My feeling is that this is a meaningful loss of ship choice, even with Carnival continuing to sail locally. If you had your heart set on Adventure or Luminosa in Australia, check the calendar carefully before planning the rest.
